Customer marketing · B2B SaaS
Shifted new accounts from 30% to 84% business customers, with content that guides them from signup to upsell
How I built the onboarding, enablement and lifecycle content that helps business buyers sign up, get set up and add services, and helps Support, Provisioning and Sales serve them.
- Role
- Content Marketing Manager → Digital Marketing Manager
- Company
- United World Telecom & Global Call Forwarding
- Timeframe
- 2019–present
- Worked with
- Support, Provisioning, Sales, Billing and IT, plus writers, designers and video
Both brands, Zoho CRM. Shares: 2019 vs Jan–Sep 2026. Accounts: 781 in 2019 → 1,739 in 2023.
The challenge
Every signup is verified by our Provisioning team before it becomes an account. In 2019, 70% of new accounts were individuals with personal use cases, and every one of those signups took Provisioning's time to verify. Only 30% were businesses.
Business buyers behave differently. They research longer, need more guidance before they sign up, and need help after: setting up numbers and routing, connecting their own phone systems, and discovering the other services that fit their needs. Marketing's job didn't end at the signup form.
My approach: content for every stage after the click
01 · Evaluate
Attract the right buyers
Business use cases, customer stories and sales brochures that speak to companies, so the people who sign up are the people we can serve.
02 · Set up
Make setup self-serve
A dedicated onboarding guide for initial setup, backed by 100+ knowledge base articles with real use cases, and clearer signup and checkout messaging, such as documentation disclaimers, so customers know what Provisioning will need.
03 · Support
Equip the teams customers talk to
Support and sales enablement guides, brochures and integration datasheets, plus live chat CSAT and in-app feedback reports. I also listen to sales and support calls to find gaps content should fill.
04 · Adopt
Show, don't just tell
How-to videos that walk customers through common tasks, part of an in-house video program that published 47 videos with 192K views across both brands in 2023.
05 · Grow
Surface the next service
A customer newsletter with soft upsells for services like AI Call Insights, Local 2-Way Voice, Outbound Calling and integrations, plus guides, control panel messaging, social posts and announcement emails for each launch.
06 · Return
Win back and advocate
A win-back campaign for high-potential customers who cancelled, and a reviews campaign inviting customers who left positive control panel feedback to review us on G2 and Capterra.
What I made
A selection from each stage, from a customer's first login to their next upgrade. My role across these: content strategy, writer and designer briefs, writing, review, approval and publishing.

Customer research
Customer stories that double as research
For each customer story, I interview the customer to understand the job they need our service to do, what they compared and why they chose us. Then I write and promote the story, and share what I learn with Sales, Support and Product, so the whole team understands real customer needs, not just marketing.
More stories I wrote, including ScienceSoft and Japan Ski Experience, are on the Going Global case study.
“The right customers don’t arrive by accident. You attract them before the signup form and keep earning them long after it.”
Results
- Business share of new accounts rose from 30% in 2019 to 84% in January–September 2026, and has stayed between 83% and 88% every month since March 2026.
- Signup quality: the share of signups that become business accounts rose from 9% to 24%, so Provisioning spends more of its time on business customers.
- Business accounts opened grew from 781 in 2019 to 1,739 in 2023 (+123%). In my first year, business accounts rose 45%.
- Win-back and advocacy: past customers reached out about new services after the win-back campaign, and the reviews campaign brought new reviews on G2 and Capterra.
- Self-serve help: knowledge base views tripled (3,145 → 10,102) and users grew 3.6x (1,588 → 5,675), Sep 2024–Oct 2026 vs the previous two years (GA4).
- Upsell: after newsletters, existing customers added services and asked about others.
The shift came from several changes working together. Company decisions tightened who could sign up: stricter provisioning documents for business customers, and a three-month upfront contract for individuals. Marketing changed who wanted to: business-first language and positioning across the website, customer logos, “business only” messaging in ads, and the onboarding and enablement content on this page. I co-led the marketing side with Business Development.
Reflection
I’d keep treating everything after the signup as marketing: onboarding, the knowledge base and newsletters do as much to grow accounts as anything before the sale. What I’d change is connecting newsletter and knowledge base activity to upgrades in Zoho, so we could measure upsell instead of relying on anecdotes.
